TransAlps 2009 - dia 0

The start date for my adventure was friday, the 17th of July. On my plan for this day the trip from London to Mittenwald.

With a very early start to catch the first tube out of Hammersmith station (luckily for me me very near to home) at 5h28. And altough that sounds pretty easy, the truth was that misfortune still hadn't left my doorstep and midway to the tube one of my bike case wheels broke.

Fortunatelly D. had the day off and had decided to acompany me to Heathrow, giving me a great aid with my 2 bags. Going down the stairs to the platform was an adventure and only after getting rid of that huge case to the overweight baggage did I felt relaxed.

The arrival at Munich happened at about 11h00 and as I still wasn't hungry decided to go straight for the train. I managed to see several other bikers on the same route as me... Hoped in to an suburban train and then had to change at Munchen-Pasing. When the train arrived there I just had to follow them. The bad thing was just another bunch of steps to overcome. Luckilly for me the germans seem to be quite nice and I ended up with one of them helping me down the stairs, even without asking for help. On the way up it was one of the british cyclists that helped me.

So I was on the final leg of my journey, just 1h30 from my destination. In my coach there were 2 other partcipants and we ended up chating. It seemed to me they didn't quite knew what they were getting in to... I was now starting to get hungry, but unfortunatelly for me regional trains in Germany are the same as portuguese ones, and so I had to wait until Mittenwald before eating anything. Which ended up being around 16h...

At Mittenwald the whole circus had already set up camp. Loads of campervans, the main teams and all the sponsors where there.

The day was sunny and the mountains around us where making me forsee a great week. Took care of our registration and at 19h the first pasta-party of the week. At this time a persistent rain had already started. The first briefing of the week
, but between a bad sound system and a lot of german and little english, we gave up half way through. What should we expect tomorrow???
