Rapha Hell of the North

Este fim de semana foi em grande, ciclisticamente falando. O tempo esteve de feição (até já parece verão por aqui com temperaturas na ordem dos 20ºC) e tive de aproveitar o sábado, domingo e 2ª (estive de folga, eheheh).

No sábado a voltinha limitou-se ao Richmond Park, mas no domingo foi dia de sair e descobrir novas estradas.

O "Rapha Hell Of The North" (RHON) é um evento de homenagem ao autêntico Hell Of The North (Paris-Roubaix) que decorreu no mesmo dia. E enquanto que a última tem as famosas seccções de paralelo - "pavé", a RHON tem secções de "gravé". Como por estas bandas o paralelo é raro (acho que há outro evento do género mais para o norte do pais esse sim com paralelo), a opção são estradas secundárias e trilhos de terra batida e mesmo algum singletrack...

Sai de Hammersmith a pedalar, juntando-me pelo caminho para o norte de Londres com o M, R e P, parceiros do quase extinto RPCC. Chegados a Pond Square lá estava a mesa para nos registarmos e uma boa dose de rodas finas preparadas para os trilhos.

Arrancamos agregados a um grupo de uns outros 30 ciclistas. Os primeiros kms foram feitos neste enorme grupo, até chegarmos ao primeiro "gravé" do dia, aqui, inesperadamente para mim, o ritmo aumentou e o facto de termos uma subida associada fez com que se partisse o gruppeto num número mais razoável.

Voltamos a acalmar no alcatrão, mas sempre que saimos dele, voltavamos a acelerar... Nunca pensei andar tão depressa com roda fina...

Felizmente que o P teve um furo e os maiores incentivadores daquelas acelerações acabaram por seguir viagem enquanto nós esperamos por ele. Continuamos com um ritmo vivo e não molengamos, mas mais razoável. Tal como no evento homenageado, os furos são o prato do dia e nós os 7 tivemos um total de 5 furos, um dos quais meu...

No final acabamos por nos baldar ao último troço de gravé, para nos apressarmos a chegar ao LoveBikesArch para ver o directo do evento françês.

Tratamos de arranjar umas pizzas de recuperação e embrenhamo-nos na atmosfera da prova, com um final emocionante.

This weekend was a big cycling one. With great weather (it felt like summer with temperatures reaching the 20ºC) I had to make the best of it and managed to go out saturday, sunday and monday (I had the day off).

The saturday was just some loops on Richmond Park, but sunday was time to go out and discover new routes.

"Rapha Hell Of The North" (RHON) is an event created as an homage to the real Hell Of The North (Paris-Roubaix) which occurred on the same day. The later has it's famous "pavé" sections, this one has "gravé" sections. As cobbles are rare near London (I do think there is something with more cobbles further north in England, the route goes through some B roads, trails and even singletracks...

So I pedaled my way out from Hammersmith, meeting M, R and P along the way to Pond Square. As we got there the registration table was quite busy with all the roadies getting ready for some dirt trails.

We started with a bunch of about 30 cyclists and the initial phase of the event was done on a big group, right up to the first section of "gravé". Here the speed quickly went up and if you add that to an uphill, the gruppeto was greatly reduced in numbers.

When back on asphalt, we would slow down a bit, but when back on dirt, there went the speed up again. Never thought I would go so fast on skinny tires...

Luckily P had a flat as the quickest of the group chose not to wait. We still managed a lively pace for the rest of the route, but just not so frantic. Flats were, as in the HON, commonplace and the 7 of us had a total of 5 of them, one of them mine...

Near the end we opted to bail out of the last dirt section, so we could get to LoveBikesArch earlier and start enjoying the coverage of Paris-Roubaix earlier.

We sorted out some recovery food (pizza) and got into the excitement of the event and it's nerve wrecking finale.
