BM3D 2012

No inicio deste mês estive la de novo. O mesmo formato do ano passado - 1o dia contra-relógio seguido de 2 dias de BTT a serio com etapas de 67 e 77km - mas desta vez do lado da organização.

Cheguei logo na 5a para poder dar uma ajudinha extra e poder aproveitar um pouco mais da natureza.

Com o acampamento num novo local, mais próximo de Crickowell, com melhores condições, mais fácil acesso e melhor sinal para os telemoveis a coisa prometia... Ja la estava um grupo da ilha de Jersey e comigo chegaram também 2 irlandeses. Este ano o numero participantes aumentou para quase 200, um numero ja de respeito.

E se em 2011 fomos presenteados com um sol de fazer inveja, nada típico de Gales, este ano o pais já fez jus a sua fama, juntando aguaceiros a festa. Nada de meter medo pois a temperatura manteve-se amena e mesmo assim ainda tive muito tempo para andar de manga curta.

A minha função foi de rider marshall, ou seja, andar no meio do magote a ver se nao havia azares com as marcações ou outros azares.

Com a benesse de um Junho bem molhado o percurso deste ano apesar de passar em vários trilhos do ano passado foi muito diferente. Bastante lama a por a prova homens e maquinas acabou por tornar o desafio ainda mais duro. Mesmo assim a maioria dos inscritos conseguiram superar os 2 dias dentro do tempo limite. O maior problema foi mesmo para os mecânicos, com muitas biclas para reparar entre cada dia.

O balanço final de novo francamente positivo, muitas caras repetidas e muita gente nova. O mesmo ambiente descontraído e amigável, com 3 dias de belos trilhos. A organização esteve de novo irrepreensível, com muito do peso em cima do Dave (BeardedMan) e mais ajudantes que no ano passado (eu incluído) e vários repetentes que sem duvida ajudaram a elevar o alto nível já demonstrado em 2011, mesmo com condições adversas a tornarem varias tarefas bem ingratas.

Quando chegar a de 2013 estou lá caído de novo, de preferencia do lado organizativo, mas se tal nao for preciso para curtir novamente as espectaculares Black Mountains.


At the beggining of this month I was at the BM3D again. Same format as last year - time trial on the first day and the following 2 with proper big day out rides - but this time I joined the organizing side as a rider marshall.

Managed a sneaky days of work and got there on thursday so that I could both help out more and enjoy the welsh countryside.

With the campsite on new grounds, closer to Crickowell, better conditions, easier access and even better mobile coverage it was a promising start. Some guys from Jersey were already there and 2 from Ireland arrived with me. The umber of entrants this year was of nearly 200...

But if in 2011 we had a rare sunny Wales, this it was back to proper welsh wet weather. Not too wet to spoil the fun, it was just some showers with plenty of sunny patches in between, and the temperature was good enough for a portuguese to walk around in his t-shirt.

Besides the wet weekend the previous weeks had also been wet so in spite repeating some of last year trails it was a completely different beast. Muddy trail put man and machine to test. Even so most of the participants finish the stages within the time limit, just made race mechanics a busy couple of nights with a load of bikes to put back in riding condition for the following stage.

Overall still a great weekend. Several faces from last years event and a lot of new ones. Even with double the entrants the same chilled and friendly atmosphere, 3 days of great riding. Amazing organization, with a lot of weight on Dave's back, more helpers than last year (including me) and most of them repeating last years tasks. That experience seems to have helped to keep the high standard of last year, even with the weather making some of those quite difficult.

When early arrives in 2013 I'll be there again. With Dave if he needs my help, but if not Just enjoying the great Black Mountains.
