Empenos

Here in the UK, as some of you know, my cycling life has changed a bit. More asphalt, less dirt. And my rides so far have been close to home.

This year the scheduling is already a bit different. so further as been dealt with, as for the faster I'm trying to sort it. Lately even pondering joining a cycling club...

On Tuesday I managed to get the whole day to myself. As I did miss a nice bashing to the legs, I took the MTB and headed to the North Downs, straight form home, of course... If anyone is curious, here is the report:

The only detail is that Monday I had done some long intervals and my legs were still trying to get back together. Ended up doing slower climbs and enjoying the views.

It was my longest ride this year. I did miss a long one... At the end I could not help to think about what felt as a hilly ride here and back home... This is a time-trialers land...

Sol

Hoje esteve sol, o dia inteiro!!!

Sunny day today, and the whole day!!!

I have even took down the mudguards on the roadie...

It was still a frosty morning, but the days are getting bigger and the winter kit making it's way to the back of the cupboard...

Tinkering

Alguém partilha a minha opinião?

Eu cá me vou motivando com as fotos e videos...

Today I had an unexpected day off. Work was cancelled and it was a day off the bike, so I had a proper day off from everything.

And in time it happened, on the MTB the fork's remote lockout was no longer unlocking and the brake pads had to be replaced (again). Lately it's each ride a new pair of pads... The British weather is lethal...

Also swapped the bent (for several months) rear disc. Hopefully these metallic pads will last longer...

For the lockout issue had to open the right leg, the oil came out like this...

Not the best of photos, but the fact that you cannot tell which is oil and which is cup is the problem... Should work better now, I hope!!

The road bike also had some attention, with new rear brake pads and chain. I do get the feeling that the 10 speed chains don't last long. It seems to me that the 9speed chains I use on the MTB last longer that the road 10 speed ones... This narrower chains thing seems to have some issues... Does anyone share this opinion?

Some people are already getting their mudguards off, but I just checked all the bolts were still tight, I have a feeling there's still a bit of rain coming my way...

In the meantime the cycling season is starting and there are more people on the roads and  there's already a MTB stage race going. It's in Andalucia (Spain), it's the first edition of the surprisingly named Andalucia Bike Race.

I'm getting some extra motivation from the photos and videos...

Renascer / Rebirth

Lately I haven't been around, with 2011 arriving, I got distracted...

With this new year, renewed plans, expectations and routes.

I'm planning to go on a couple of events more, making myself an excuse to get to know a bit more of the UK. The biggest of them should be the Tour of Wessex and the Black Mountain 3 days. I'm still trying to decide other things to fit in between, just can't take too long, around here they get full pretty quick...

In the meantime I've been maintaining my weekend rides and I'm trying to get my mind to start a more structured training, so that I can enjoy the biggest ride of the year, the Camiño de Santiago with the company of R.M.

More news soon, or maybe not...

Festejar o Inverno / Celebrating Winter

Mesmo assim, fiz-me à neve e enfrentei o frio.

A rota do dia aqui.

21st of December, Winter's official start. Not that haven't felt it before, but there is only one winter solstice, the 21st, the shortest day of the year.

And what better to celebrate it than a new project. Connecting London to Oxford by MTB, using National Cycle Routes 4 and 5. A very romantic idea, but the fact that IT IS WINTER,, the UK is covered in snow and the theoretical track (that does not include all the twist and turns of real life) of 90 miles made me think I might be biting a bit more than I could chew...

Even so I suited up and got into the cold.

There´s still plenty of snow in London, but with 2 days after it fell, there is plenty of ice and sludge on the side road, and reasonably clear main road. Richmond Park and getting there was the riskiest of the whole day. The furthest I went the snowier it was, but also quieter. That meant softer snow and the also the better I got at riding it.

The only if is that the increase in safety meant a decrease in speed... But it still was much better than riding on the busy british roads. I finished my riding for the day in Windsor, roughly 1/3 of the planned route...

The Christmasy scenery was the highlight of the day, with the cold keeping my stops few and short. Luckily I was pretty wrapped up and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The days route here.

Slip and slide

Another cycling discipline on my curricula.

This time my first CX event. The 9th round of the Central League, at Hillingdon Race Circuit, also used in road events. Luckilly I had the company of M., which has participated on this series but was missing this one due to a cold. He just came to watch it and show me how to get there.

CX is a winter sport, so cold days are expected. And the 12th was cold, but quite clear.

As I don't have a proper CX bike and the Central League is not one of the big series you can participate with MTB's, road bikes... if it has pedals and no engine, it's ok. The closest thing I had was my comuter, no suspension fork, road sized crankset (or very old school MTB to be more specific) and a road cassete.

At the start all the main categories (Seniors, Veterans, Females and Juniors) are together, we were about 60. I was in the Senior, for 50 minutes + 1 lap, MX style... Short and intense.

As usual my start wasn't the best, as you have to go full throttle from the go. And keep on going during the remainder of the event. The circuits are short, I took less than 10 minutes on each lap. It's on a small area, so there's lots of twisting and turning, short climbs, barriers to run past, some mud and loads of lawn mower built trails. During my 7 laps I got to 20th place, but was passed again on the last few turns...
PC131648

As it is a short event, it was always on the red, no drinking or eating. There's always a turn to do or someone to go and get. A lot of fun...
PC131617

When I finished the first thing I needed was some air and then some water. Having a break also feels very good...
PC131671

The plan was to do another event tomorrow, at Herne Hill, but has we had about 2 hours of heavy snow today, everybody panicked and the event has been canceled. Don't know if there will any other nearby, the CX season is nearly finished...

Numa fria manhã de Outono / On a cold Autumn morning

On a cold Autumn's morning I decided to do a bike ride. Road wouldn't do for the fix, it had to be MTB... I also didn't feel like planning my acording to a train timetable.

The solution, to inovate.

Through GPSies I found some tracks that could lead me to Box Hill, from home. Living the London's zone 2, my plan was to ride to Box and take the train back.

And as with any unknown track, it is a roulette. But it was my lucky day...

Their calling it the "big freeze", I just say it's cold and on the first few miles it was hard to get my fingers warm. Fortunately as the dirt started, 1 hour after I started,, I was fine I could enjoy the sound of crunchy grass. That nice because it meant mud would not be an issue...

Even with all that frost I still crossed paths with a few walkers and some horse riders, cyclists, only a couple.

I arrived at Box in a mere 2h30, rode a fair amount of singletrack (as expected in the North Downs). I stopped at the cafe and quickly understood why there were no other cyclists. You quickly get cold out in the open...

It wasn't nearly lunch time so I chose to ride back, after all, taking the train should take me around 1h30...  A few more people smiling on the trails (these Brits do love the outdoors and are always very cordial) and then into civilization near Kingston.

Now I just have to get some more London MTBers to start using these trails more often...

Homenagem

2 weeks ago, at the end of my ride I noticed that my wind stopping vest is getting old.

The collar is beginning to fray and one of the zippers just fell apart today (luckily it's the one i use the lest).

It has years of use, it was an offer from my parents as I was starting my MTB explorations. On the then innovative Windstopper fabric (still pretty famous today). It's one of the old versions of it, so it's thick and perfect for chilly days (so all winter in Portugal and autumn and spring in England).

It quickly became my favorite piece riding kit, as it is today. Most of today's vests are thin and have no pockets, this one has 2 nice deep ones. And I love having plenty of pockets, you will usually find them full with wallet, phone, food, spare stuff... I motto is "always be prepared".

I have used it in hundreds of events and placas, TransPortugal, TranAples, SRP 160, PTG 100, rides in Portugal, Spain and UK.

Today one of it's zippers had it's last breath... With the more than 10 years it has, other things might follow. But I don't know if I can ever find any other as good, so will try my best to keep it in for as long as possible.

Even when it has it's end, I doubt if I can ever get rid of it. I have too many fond memories attached to it...

Disapointement day

"Olha, a minha corrente!!!"

So this was THE day. But not for me, it seemed...

I started with the wrong foot when I saw the train leaving as soon as I had bought my ticket. I had to wait for 1 hour for the next one, riding to the start was out of the question, it was too far... Fortunately I had wrapped up warmer than last time, but was still able to appreciate the cold morning air.

As the train arrived it destination, I just had to cross Swinley. Got the starting area with 10 minutes to spare, just enough to sort out my kit. As there weren't many at the start I was just on the 2nd row.

The start was very fast, I found myself wondering what was I doing there, going that fast, that early, hurts... But as I was on the first 5 and the commanding trio was still reachable my enthusiasm was keeping me going.

When coming out of a turn, tried to go from big to middle ring but the chain got jammed between the big ring and the derailleur, had to look at it for a few seconds before I figured out what was wrong and when I solved the issue I was at the back of the bunch. Change of goals, now it was going as fast as reasonable, and what would that sum up to at the end.

The circuit was soggy but not muddy. Loads of singles ( as usual on Gorrick events) and more climbs than the previous round. Roughly at 3/4 of the loop, on a singletrack climb the chain started skipping and made me run up it. When it got flatter I jumped on my steed and pedaled again. At the second stroke I was spinning on empty. Looked back and "oh, there's my chain!!!"

With all that had happened before, I decided that it was time to relax and stop competing. I would just go for one more lap and some photos.

But that was not the end of it, on the next climb (roughly 100m further ahead) I found myself spinning out again, with no chain. THAT'S IT, I'M GOING HOME...
