Chuvadas

Por estas bandas tem andado bem molhado.

Levei com molha no último dia do Tour Of Wessex.

The weather has been quite wet lately.

Got wet at the last day of the Tour Of Wessex. On the following weekend went to visit friends in Norwich and got properly wet on the return from King's Cross to home (had to go riding) and this friday the same again. On this last one 20 minutes were enough to leave soaking wet...

The British summer is at it's usual and the will power to go out even with the rain is gone. Result, rode yesterday (it was dry) but did not have the courage to do it today. There goes my training for the Black Mountain 3 Days.

Tour of Wessex - Somerset (30 Maio)

E acompanhou-me a maior parte do dia.

Somerset Levels, Quantock Hills, Dunster Castle, Exmoor National Park.

106 miles, 9066 feet of climbing.

The 3rd and last day of the Tour Of Wessex was the lumpiest one. The ride headed straight West, getting to Exmoor, climbing the Dunkery Beacon and then heading back to Somerton. So proper climbs were expected, with the highest "Col" at 1640 feet.

The day had a bad start, as predicted, it was raining. Well I did get out of the hotel with no rain, but 2 minutes after that it did start, and did stick with me most of the day...

The first 30km were flat, but with all the rain, there was even less people at the start gate. There wasn't even groups forming to go out, I just did a rolling start. Perfect, because with the rain I did not want to stop...

So this first bit of the stage was a solo effort, I only managed the join a bunch quite near to the first climb, where, as usual, it completely disintegrated.

That climb left us at the first feed station where I did a quick stop. We headed down after it so I had to best quick so not to lose too much body heat... My choice for my lightest rain cape (hoping that the rain would eventually stop) was dictating my stops...

The second climb of the day (the most beautiful for me) took us to the top of the Quantock Hills, through an old woodland, shame about the rain, it must be gorgeous... Had some steep bit , getting up to 16% (my gear ratio options were not ideal, again...).

Now we were taking all the back roads, some quite narrow, all quite hilly, but very nice to ride on. Just a shame that after those we had a 12km stretch of A39 to do. At least it wasn't raining as hard by now.

When we left the A39 we were right at the bottom of the Dunkery Beacon. 3,1miles of climbing, 1300 feet of rise, with a some 20% bits. If you add that to the 3 earlier ones that day, I had to put in some effort... The 2nd feed station was at the top, and it started to rain again. Quick refueling and down we go, to the B3224, which headed East nearly straight into Somerton. As it was heading down it was time for the big ring to do some work.

We were still awarded with a last climb to get to feed station 3 (just the the first one was). Again some 17% ramps.. I do wonder if all the climbs on that area are that steep or if they picked them on purpose. By this time I had enough of steepness for a while (those who now me, do know that I do like my climbs).

The last 40km were nearly pan flat. I finally was able to get rid of the rain cape... Also to help my return a bunch of 4 riders caught up with me and it was possibly to get back to Somerton in 6h50, and not the 7h30 that I was expecting...

This was definitively the hardest stage, due to all those climb and also the bad weather. Still was worth doing it, even if it left completely wrecked...

After a quick (and warm) shower I had a quick bite  (the options were limited comparing with the other days), getting in the car and do the 2h45 back to the airport.

Tour of Wessex - Somerset & Dorset (29 Maio)

Pareceu-me boa aposta.

RNAS Yeovilton, Minterne Magna, Cerne Abbas Giant, Jurassic Coast, Milton Abbas, Bulbarrow Hill, Sherborne Castle.

Stage 2 - 117 miles, 7346 feet of climbing.

Second dose of miles today. One day is no longer enough for me, so I'm in a pack of 3... I had gone to bed with sore legs and kept waking up during the night. It might go all wrong today...

The alarm was set for the same time, but we ended up leaving delayed... But as there was no registration, I managed to get on the road at the same time as yesterday... The fact that there was fewer participants also helped.

We had quite a few km for the first climbs, I sticked with my plan and stayed with a big bunch. The going was fast and in under 1 hour we were at the first one. Here the bunch fell apart and each did his own pace. There also quite a few slower starters in the mix that we had to ride past.

I overtook a few riders and was overtaken by a few others. From the end of the climbs to the 1st feed station ended up joining a few small groups a being dropped by others. Somewhere between this feed station and the next managed to find myself one the same bunch that had caught me at the end of yesterdays stage. I thought that staying with them sounded very good and so I did. The pace was not the fastest on the climbs, but as soon as those finished they quickly where next to me. Also with another windy day, it was the most rational option.

So I managed to stay in the bunch until the 191km finished. Still had a scary experience on a country downhill road, when a truck was making its way up and taking 4/5 of the road... The first 4 of us managed to fit between it and the brush, but behind us there was a crash and some mechanicals. Luckily nothing serious and we all rode away.

Our neatly organized chain gang still had its 5 minutes of fame in the way of some filming by the race camera. It was pretty flat and fast at that time, so I was working pretty hard to hang in...

So it was another great day, great scenery and this day good company. Riding in the bunch made it quicker and much more fun... The legs did well and I finished fresher than on saturday.

Tomorrow is the last day, heading out do Devon. It's the day with the most climbing...I just hope that the total distance is not much different from what is written on the form...

P.S. - At the end I had a bonus 11km recovery ride to the hotel... D. was lost and after my 1h30 wait she called me and advised that I should make a move. She was still not sure of where she was...

Tour Of Wessex - Somerset & Wiltshire (28 Maio)

Sábado foi o primeiro dia do Tour Of Wessex.

Rapidamente montei a bicla e tratei do dito registo.

Glastonbury Tor, Somerset Levels, Cheddar Gorge, Burrington Combe, Mendip Hills, Wells Cathedral, Alfred's Tower, Stourhead House.

Saturday was the first day on the Tour Of Wessex. 99,5 miles and 7512 feet of climbing was the ride of the day.

With an early awakening for our breakfast, I had planned to get to Somerton before 8H30. I still had to register and get to the start gate before 9h. As I'm not sleeping in Somerton still had to do a short car trip.

At the event's HQ it was all very organized. Several members of the start were controlling the traffic and parking of the cars so that everything would flow. After that quickly put my bike together and did the so said registration. Still managed to get in the cue to the gate before the first ones got out.

We were going out in groups of 50 and quickly dispersing. Everyone was going at their own pace for the start. I tried to get some company, but it was too early for that.

As the first proper climb was only at km 80, I was trying not to push it too hard and stay in a bunch. Managed to ride with a few groups but it kept on changing as my pace on the climbs does not match with the one on the flats...

When we did get to à Cheddar Gorge the route was straight up it. Great scenery and a good climb, long and not too steep.

At it's end we had the first feed station and shortly after that I made my wrong turn. Or in this case didn't. I missed the signs and went forward instead of turning, ended up doing an extra 7km... If you take into account the overall distance it's fairly little...

The route started to turn more hilly and I managed to meet some Londoners on the way to the 2nd Feed station. There I did a lengthier stop (not much) for a couple of sandwiches (there was plenty of variety) and refill my bottle. I had already 3h of riding by this point.

So I was starting alone again on the undulating road. We had our first shower, luckily I put my rain cape just in time...

The 2nd big climb of the day came as a bit of a surprise. It got steeper and steeper and at the end I cursed the day when I decided to change my cassette form a 12-27 to a 11-25. IT WAS PAINFUL...

I was starting to feel tired, but still had over 1/3 of the day to go. Managed to get some company on a few of the flat sections, but it was the usual problem on the climbs.

The last 20km were done in the company of a bigger group that caught up with me and it helped a lot with the strong head wind we had to face. The difference between driving the pace and sitting on a wheel was of 20bpm...

Tomorrow is another day, hope the legs pull back together. They are pretty sore at the moment...

Tour of Wessex

I'll be in Somerset this weekend, for 3 days of turning the pedals.

Ive entered the Tour of Wessex, a 3 day sportive, on roads I don't know at all...

From the course profiles it seems quite flat, so I'm hoping the scenery will be worth it.

Stay tuned for more news...

BORS

Last sunday I did the Bucks Off Road Sportive. An event on the Portuguese MTB marathon style, long distances, marked route and no time keeping, a sportive, in UK terms.

My previous planning meant that I would have to ride for 1:30 to the start at Denham. The trains were in works so I could not take the replacement bus service (no bikes allowed).

An early to the day and with Cyclestreet's help I hit the road. I followed the quickest route, which lead me along a cycleway next the busy A40. Quite boring but did get there quicker than scheduled, even with a last minute detour when the A40 turned into an M and the cycleway ended...

At the start there were already plenty of cars and people. It seemed the good weather helped everybody to get out of bed early. Signed the check-in and out again, the urge to get pedaling was getting to me.

There was all sorts of bikes, the latest FS to full hardtails, Klein's to Specialized's, CXer's... Proper cycling atmosphere, all you need is a pair of wheels and the will to ride...

This time the start was a bit more random, everybody at the same time. The first singletrack came pretty quick, as the first and only  "cycling jam" of the day.

Met J. with which I had rode on the Princes Risborough event and we rode together to the first feed. There he stop to re-fuel and me just to lose fluids, so I lost sight of him... Still had a few followers, but when I diverted for the longest ride, they all went for the medium one (still 100km).

At a certain point the trails started to look familiar... All was cleared when I rode by the Princes Risborough school gate. It felt odd the ride to somewhere I had only a couple of wheels ago took the train too... But this time instead of a 30 minutes ride + 45 minutes train it took a few hours more... This was about half way, and by this time I was feeling the need for a little feed break...

There were a few people there, but everyone pretty quiet, the km do get to all of us... Refilled the camelbak, had a banana and piece of cake (which was very, very good), and on my way again. Off to Denham.

Near the end of the ride a member of the WDMBC caught up with me me and we did the last 30 minutes together. Time for some MTB chatter and enjoying the last singletracks of the day, this time with no traffic jams...

Finished with 6h30 of riding, we had a mug of tea awaiting for us. Had a bite to eat and headed home again, but this time opted to take the tube. After a 15 minutes ride and 45 minutes tube journey I was at my doorstep, with a great day of riding under my belt...

If your interested, here is the BORS route.

Princes Risborough

On the 16th I went back to my roots, for some MTBing. With very dry weather lately, I was expecting a fast and dry ride. And all of it in new trails (at least for me).

Princes Risborough was the start point for the Southern Trail Series event. The events include a MTB ride on saturday and sportive on sunday. Happening north of London, I took a train in Marylebone, that dropped me off in the Chilterns, on the small and quiet town.

The registration and start were at the local school and getting there very easy, the size of the town might have helped a bit...

Having arrived early (8h30) the register was quick and I started getting rid of the extra layers I had on me. What feels nice at 6h30 would be too much at 12h... The organization was finishing setting up the electronic timing system (ankle chips and mats) and we started a few minutes before 9h, the scheduled time for it. As the system here seems to be for a window period of starts instead of a mass start it was very relaxed and calm. The decision which route to take is up to you and everyone starts whenever they wish (within reason).

Being that I had never ridden in that area, I had even taken my camera, but finished with only a couple. Not that the scenery was not worth it, I was just too distracted with the cycling.  I had caught up with a bunch of 4 that had a pace similar to mine and we ended up doing most of the route together, pushing each other a bit further than expected.

With the start right in the middle of the Chilterns I was expecting a hilly ride, possibly some long climbs. It ended up not as hilly as desired, but bumpy enough to test the legs.
It's been some since I had such a tough/fun ride. The climbs done at a hard pace and the downhills enjoyed in their best, i even pushed the pace on some flats... 3 good MTB hours, riding at speed can be quite fun...

Rapha Hell of the North

This weekend was a big cycling one. With great weather (it felt like summer with temperatures reaching the 20ºC) I had to make the best of it and managed to go out saturday, sunday and monday (I had the day off).

The saturday was just some loops on Richmond Park, but sunday was time to go out and discover new routes.

"Rapha Hell Of The North" (RHON) is an event created as an homage to the real Hell Of The North (Paris-Roubaix) which occurred on the same day. The later has it's famous "pavé" sections, this one has "gravé" sections. As cobbles are rare near London (I do think there is something with more cobbles further north in England, the route goes through some B roads, trails and even singletracks...

So I pedaled my way out from Hammersmith, meeting M, R and P along the way to Pond Square. As we got there the registration table was quite busy with all the roadies getting ready for some dirt trails.

We started with a bunch of about 30 cyclists and the initial phase of the event was done on a big group, right up to the first section of "gravé". Here the speed quickly went up and if you add that to an uphill, the gruppeto was greatly reduced in numbers.

When back on asphalt, we would slow down a bit, but when back on dirt, there went the speed up again. Never thought I would go so fast on skinny tires...

Luckily P had a flat as the quickest of the group chose not to wait. We still managed a lively pace for the rest of the route, but just not so frantic. Flats were, as in the HON, commonplace and the 7 of us had a total of 5 of them, one of them mine...

Near the end we opted to bail out of the last dirt section, so we could get to LoveBikesArch earlier and start enjoying the coverage of Paris-Roubaix earlier.

We sorted out some recovery food (pizza) and got into the excitement of the event and it's nerve wrecking finale.

Projecto Londres-Oxford

Estava sim e essa perspectiva deu-me novo ânimo.

Some of you might recall a project I started during winter to link London to Oxford. At that time I didn't get very far... As my report stated.

Last saturday (02 April) the weather was nice and I thought it was about time I pushed it forward a bit more

Once again the plan was to follow NCR4 up to Reading and from here the NCR 5 to Oxford. With a lot more of daytime now i managed to leave early (8:00, even so later than initially planned) and would have plenty of daylight to get further than in December.

After 2:30 of riding I found myself in Windsor, a huge difference from a few months ago... I got to  Reading near lunchtime and took a break for a sandwich on a park next to the Thames. 96km were already done and dusted.

After Reading was the longest section with no easy access to train stations and also the Chilterns, the highest hills of the whole route.

They were definitively the longest climb of the day, but easier than expected. It was the highlight of the route because of the quiet and scenic routes and the view that expected me on the other side of the hills. A vast and colorful plain.

When I got to Didcot and its imposing power station I started seeing indications for Oxford. Was it that close???

Indeed I was and that prospect gave some a new breath of strength. I was starting to see more people either walking, cycling or navigating the river. On the streets of Oxford loads of people out. Everyone was getting some sun, and i decided to quickly go to the train station.

I took the slow train to Paddington (1:30 journey time), where I could finally put the bike aside and stretch my legs for a while.

7h20 spinning the pedals, a total of 150 km, on a very cyclocrossy route. Some 80% were asphalted and the remainder off road bits were nasty for a race bike but good for either a city bike, tourer or CXer.

Oh, sorry for not having any photos, but my mood was more into doing some miles than to keep stopping for photos. If someone joins me the next time I do it I promise I will take the camera.

200

A repetir.

A couple of years back there was a film with a similar name, but don't expect any semi-nacked men with computer enhanced abs on this post.

In this case 200 refers not to number of people, but to km. That's what I did on the 26th March. On  a road bike... I'm a bit crazy, not not enough to do it on a MTB, yet...

As I was a bit suspicious of the state I would end up in and my companion for the day is faster than me, there were no photos for the day, you will just have my thoughts.

The route was the famous CCC (capital - coast - capital) , an important mark for any London cyclist. You can basically sum it as going to the beach.

The route goes straight to the south of London, crossing the North Downs, a familiar area to me. And that was the most hilly we saw all day, so a pretty flat route. The scenery with loads of green and some wooded areas.

As we got to Worthing, the volume of traffic was noticeably higher, but it felt pretty good to be able to see the sea again...

After a quick break for some sausage on toast we headed back, through a different roads. Still pretty flat, just with Box Hill to test the legs. With us taking on very calm 9:25, my strength was fading and I was already imagining what M. would do to me on the fast roads between Box and Kingston.

A total of 7h20 turning the pedals, with nicely tired legs at the end. Definitively to do again.
