Numa fria manhã de Outono / On a cold Autumn morning

On a cold Autumn's morning I decided to do a bike ride. Road wouldn't do for the fix, it had to be MTB... I also didn't feel like planning my acording to a train timetable.

The solution, to inovate.

Through GPSies I found some tracks that could lead me to Box Hill, from home. Living the London's zone 2, my plan was to ride to Box and take the train back.

And as with any unknown track, it is a roulette. But it was my lucky day...

Their calling it the "big freeze", I just say it's cold and on the first few miles it was hard to get my fingers warm. Fortunately as the dirt started, 1 hour after I started,, I was fine I could enjoy the sound of crunchy grass. That nice because it meant mud would not be an issue...

Even with all that frost I still crossed paths with a few walkers and some horse riders, cyclists, only a couple.

I arrived at Box in a mere 2h30, rode a fair amount of singletrack (as expected in the North Downs). I stopped at the cafe and quickly understood why there were no other cyclists. You quickly get cold out in the open...

It wasn't nearly lunch time so I chose to ride back, after all, taking the train should take me around 1h30...  A few more people smiling on the trails (these Brits do love the outdoors and are always very cordial) and then into civilization near Kingston.

Now I just have to get some more London MTBers to start using these trails more often...

Homenagem

2 weeks ago, at the end of my ride I noticed that my wind stopping vest is getting old.

The collar is beginning to fray and one of the zippers just fell apart today (luckily it's the one i use the lest).

It has years of use, it was an offer from my parents as I was starting my MTB explorations. On the then innovative Windstopper fabric (still pretty famous today). It's one of the old versions of it, so it's thick and perfect for chilly days (so all winter in Portugal and autumn and spring in England).

It quickly became my favorite piece riding kit, as it is today. Most of today's vests are thin and have no pockets, this one has 2 nice deep ones. And I love having plenty of pockets, you will usually find them full with wallet, phone, food, spare stuff... I motto is "always be prepared".

I have used it in hundreds of events and placas, TransPortugal, TranAples, SRP 160, PTG 100, rides in Portugal, Spain and UK.

Today one of it's zippers had it's last breath... With the more than 10 years it has, other things might follow. But I don't know if I can ever find any other as good, so will try my best to keep it in for as long as possible.

Even when it has it's end, I doubt if I can ever get rid of it. I have too many fond memories attached to it...

Disapointement day

"Olha, a minha corrente!!!"

So this was THE day. But not for me, it seemed...

I started with the wrong foot when I saw the train leaving as soon as I had bought my ticket. I had to wait for 1 hour for the next one, riding to the start was out of the question, it was too far... Fortunately I had wrapped up warmer than last time, but was still able to appreciate the cold morning air.

As the train arrived it destination, I just had to cross Swinley. Got the starting area with 10 minutes to spare, just enough to sort out my kit. As there weren't many at the start I was just on the 2nd row.

The start was very fast, I found myself wondering what was I doing there, going that fast, that early, hurts... But as I was on the first 5 and the commanding trio was still reachable my enthusiasm was keeping me going.

When coming out of a turn, tried to go from big to middle ring but the chain got jammed between the big ring and the derailleur, had to look at it for a few seconds before I figured out what was wrong and when I solved the issue I was at the back of the bunch. Change of goals, now it was going as fast as reasonable, and what would that sum up to at the end.

The circuit was soggy but not muddy. Loads of singles ( as usual on Gorrick events) and more climbs than the previous round. Roughly at 3/4 of the loop, on a singletrack climb the chain started skipping and made me run up it. When it got flatter I jumped on my steed and pedaled again. At the second stroke I was spinning on empty. Looked back and "oh, there's my chain!!!"

With all that had happened before, I decided that it was time to relax and stop competing. I would just go for one more lap and some photos.

But that was not the end of it, on the next climb (roughly 100m further ahead) I found myself spinning out again, with no chain. THAT'S IT, I'M GOING HOME...

RACE DAY

Another day of XC awaits for me tomorrow. Again an early start, this time in Crowthorne, for the Gorrick Autumn Series round 2.

This time I've taken it one step further and will start 2 minutes earlier, on a higher cat, super master", I'll have one more lap.

I'm expecting to go once more always at my limit, must avoid being lapped...

Sigma Sport

E vale bem a pena. A loja é grande e espaçosa, bem organizada e aprazivel. Muitas biclas, muita roupa (Gore, Assos, Castelli...)...

Today I went for a spin on the surrey Hills. Nothing new or spectacular, but on my way back went through Sigma Sport's new shop, opening today.

And it well worth the trip. Is big and spacious, tidy and with loads of offer. Loads of bikes, loads of clothing... Tomorrow and sunday they are running more special events to get people in.

The shop is just off the normal return route from the Surrey Hills ride. I might be stopping by more often...

Folhas caindo / Falling Leaves

Autumn is coming round. The days are getting colder, the colors changing and daily routines adapting to the longer nights.

Usually I end up more time at home and less on the bike, but not this year...

The neverending fight between the warmth on the couch and the need to push the pedals round is being won the the later. Undoubtedly the fact that Autumn is my favourite season in the UK has been helping a lot. The woods explode in brown, gold and yellow. Everything is changing, chestnuts falling down, trees losing their leafage.

that when I get my MTB and go play in the puddles, looking for the next amazing color to mesmerize me.

I'll leave you with some photos from my last wander, near Dorking.

Gorrick Autumn Classic 1 - Swinley Forest

I had already thought of entering one of their events last year. They're close to London, train access is easy and they have a good reputation.

So I finally made a move and am very glad I did. I chose the Master Male cat that would be one the earlier starts, being able to return home at a decent time, but having to go out before sunrise.

When I entered the train there was another MTBer there, also going for the race. The 30 minute trip went very quickly with all the chatting.

I had already registered online but he did it when we arrived, so we did a lap of the circuit together. The circuit was quite good, with a couple of steep climbs at the first third of the lap and a easier remainder of the loop. There was plenty of singletrack. So we were in for a lot of fun.

As for the race itself, we were the third wave of starters (super master e super veteran before us).  M. was in the same cat but he was further up the field and quickly disappeared. I was going at my pace and started passing some slower competitors, mainly for the other cats.

As usual on a XC event, I was always on the red... Breathless and giving it all I had. As the ride was fun, the 3 laps finished very quickly.

I finished with the need to come back, probably already on the 14th of November, this time on the Super Masters, for the extra lap.

The full standings here.

More images here and here.

And finally my 3 laps.
