O atleta seguinte estava a 45minutos...
The sixt stage was another of the most awaited ones. Joining Castelo de Vide to Évora was the plan for the day, with 170km of trails to go through. Most people had never rode that far on a MTB...
It’s also a long stage for the organization, with the first riders going out before 7am and the last ones scheduled arrival time after 8pm. A few athletes opted to skip it due to the tiredness caused by the previous 5 days.
The highlights were the start of the stage with a long stretch of roman cobbles, most of it downhill, a lot of bone wrattling and lost water bottles were expected (7 in 2009) and the passage at Évoramonte on the final stretch of the the day.
The day was gorgeous again, as it has been on the previous ones (even in the cold Serra da Estrela one). I had the company of P very early, on a slow but steady pace. Might the wear of the race be getting to him??
Also met T, he was standing next to the trail, with severe pain on his knee. He had to quit the stage and we headed back for a bit to get him a ride to the finish. While we waited we chatted about our countries, lifestyles and what to see.
After he was picked up I managed to ride alone for about 1 hour. Spring is in full blossom and it really felt great to fully enjoy it on that stretch. Met P again near CP6B where he would also quit and take a lift. The next competitor had passed the CP 45 minutes before so I got also got a ride to meet him (20km up ahead), otherwise I would be riding alone all day.
Always on quite flat terrain we got closer and closer to Évoramonte, but with the heavily ruted, muddy and rocky trails the going was tough. The climb to Évoramonte was the chery on top of the cake, with quite old and overgrown trail which made walking the option to take.
At the top there was CP7D and my parents. I was entitled to a couple of photos and some assistance, something that the competitors cannot afford on penalty of disqualification. There is a great view from the top but we didn’t stay long, there were still 50km to go and time was running short.
With the exhaustion and a slow route, at CP6E the day was already close to finishing. A opted to quit and once again we had to call AA. While we were waiting the remaining competitors still on the stage managed to finish the stage, so also I had a car ride to the finish. And thank god for that, this was another very long day... I started riding at 8h30 and only got to the hotel at 20h40... All I was dreaming of was a relaxing shower, but also hopping that I would not get to late for dinner. This felt the longest day of all the race...
Dia 5 - a entrada no Alentejo
Nada mau.
The stage connected Ladoeiro and Castelo de Vide. An easier stage, with the highlights being the passage by Vila Velha de Rodão and the final section arriving at Castelo de Vide.
Once again I spent most of my day with P at a very steady pace. I enjoyed the beautiful scenery that the month of May offers and the grandeur of the “Tagus doorway”. At the end of the stage encouraged P as most as I could and he did manage to climb all of the roman cobble road up to Castelo de Vide and finished in time.
We finished early so I had enough time for all the daily routines, arrive on time for dinner and even to the next stage's briefing... Not bad...

A longa, sinuosa e rápida descida depressa acabou.
On this stage we went from Penhas da Saúde to Ladoeiro. In theory an easier day with a quick downhill at the start and the remainder much flatter than earlier. The highlights were the crossings of Monsanto and Idanha a Velha.
The morning was quite sunny, but very windy and cold. The athletes were all staying as long as they could inside the hotel and discussing the best options to fight the cold.
As usual got out a little behind the bunch and had to go so fast that pedalling was useless. I had all the layers I could and did manage to keep the cold out, but when I stopped to take a photo I quickly had to start again, too windy and cold... I can only imagine what the fastest guys felt like with as little clothing as they had... Long, winding and fast the downhill was over to fast.
I caught up with F but as soon as I caught up he quickly rode away (the Portuguese all tend to have that reaction) and I was in the company of P again. We had another of our long chatty days. We enjoyed the good scenery and took our time looking at the flowers. We had some technical bit and I found another water bottle (had found another on the previous day’s climb)
Monsanto could be seen very early on the stage, so we had an idea of was awaiting us, it was the scenic and ridng highlight of the day had a delightful cobble road to get up there and another to go down. I also used the fact that we were in a village to eat at a cafe. I had a very nice “chouriço” sandwich.
Found T at the end of the downhill I accompanied him to the finish. Still had a problem when he got his camera out of his pocket and the battery popped out and fell in the vegetation. We had a good 10 minute search but we managed to find it. He was so happy he gave me a big hug... I really have try and learn some more Japanese cause our chats are very limited...
I had a very quiet day, with a relaxed pace which helped a lot with my recovery...

O dia E.
The Serra da Estrela stage the one I was most eager for. It was a completely new stage and I had never done any MTBing on that part of Portugal. It was also a very hard stage, with alpine level climbing.
I finally had my bike complete, wheel and all, just had some rubber missing... Being heavy must really wear down your kit...
The start at in suburban Guarda was going down, when the slope inverted, it was in a extreme way and the granny ring quickly came into action. It was going to have a hard day. Found a Portuguese competitor with a mechanical and some problems sorting, I think his problem was just being too stressed about it. After sorting it he quickly disappeared... As a result I had the next downhill all to myself, a gorgeous “calçada“ with great views combined with hard work, a great mix.
After a few kilometers on the Mondego valley we went up on a climb the locals call “The Queen”, I quickly understood the reason, granny ring all the way up. I met A. which was having a bad day, ending up to end his choose not to start the next climb to try and recover a bit.
As I was quite a bit behind the last guy I got a ride from JV, some 25 minutes on a soft but steady climb until we got next to P, I jumped on the bike right next to the climb to “Santinha” a name with some weight on Portuguese MTB. Another great opportunity to wear down the granny ring. At the top the climbing got to me and I was getting pretty tired. Still managed to look at the view but with the wind and cold could not really enjoy it after wrapping up I quickly headed down.
The track went up and down through the mountain side until it finally left us at the bottom of the Manteigas valley, to get out of it we had the longest climb of the day, 17km all the way to the top. It went from asphalt to heavily rutted double-track, steep to steady, it had everything.
I finally managed to get to the finish line with it open T had a hard day and when he got there there was a large group of participants and staff awaiting him to give a loud cheer. It was also good for me, I was starting to think it was my karma was not helping the athletes that rode with my company...
The day was also very hard for me and I chose to have one of the famous massages given team. As usual, got to bed at 0h...
